Kevin Garnett Rain Commercial

A post about this is long overdue. What do you all think of Kevin Garnett hatching from a basketball and emerging in the pouring rain to endorse Gatorade's new drink "Rain." I was not impressed because I thought the people at Gatorade should have had a commercial before this telling people exactly what "Rain" was. But I also know that there's a debate in the advertising world over that kind of thing. Sometimes it's better to create a commercial that gets people curious so that they go out and do more research or try it. Please tell me what you think about this spot.

Comments

only saw the commercial once, at first thought it was a Spalding commercial since the brand on the basketball is very prominent. Then it reminded me of the Nike Hurrache 2k4 commercial, with the "hatching". Left me pretty unimpressed, though I wasn't aware that KG had signed with Gatorade.

Totally agree with you. The prominent placement of Spalding was so distracting that for a while you thought it was a commercial to sell basketballs.

Didn't the ball's "tendrils" remind you of the movie Alien??? Also the color of the rain was red and looked like blood.

"Alien" definitely came to mind. I was too a bit confused about the color of the rain since there isn't a red color of the drink. Perhaps we both saw it wrong?

do you know what song they play in the beginning of the new Gatorade commercial for Nascar? i know the 2nd one is a Doobie Brothers song, i've heard the first one, i know his vocal arrangements, i think it's john fogerty, but i'm hoping you'd know

if you know the song anyone, please e-mail me with the song please, i've bin going crazy trying to figure it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please label it "the song"

We'll try to get that for you, Brian. On another note, in checking out how people get to my site someone typed in today in Google, "Who is the volleyball player that comes out of the ball in the Gatorade commercial." Can we say this Garnett spot is confusing some people?

What are these ads supposed to be telling the consumer? That they will hatch out of a circus-sized Paul Bunyon ball and become a super-athlete if they drink Rain? What about mountain climbers? What will they hatch out of? A carabiner?

I think you get my point.

Curiousity aside Darren, I think that the reference to the "Alien" nature of these ads is actually hurting gatorade. My "focus group" of 3 people have all had a negative reaction to these ads using words like gross and disturbing. Where is the money shot of Michael? I miss MJ.

Gatorade hasn't used MJ for years now and he is under contract through 2007. I kind of wonder what is going on there.

Relevance.

This commercial actually made me go, "Wooaah." It was awesome, but I've only seen it twice. Play it more!

I saw another commerical and it's weird and doesn't make you want to drink Gatorade. A ball uncofortably gives birth to a woman who then stands in a shower of pee...see oter comments on the intrenet about this...it's unappetizing. What was Gatorade thinking! Oh, and I had no idea about this "Rain" product line...The idea of gatorade on people's skin is cool but not yellow rain...

Not much on my mind right now. Today was a complete loss. So it goes. I've just been sitting around waiting for something to happen. I've basically been doing nothing , but I guess it doesn't bother me.

Today was a complete loss, but oh well. I don't care. So it goes. Nothing going on , but shrug. Not much on my mind these days. Such is life.
